Pyongyang at night.

Members of the Intrepid-DX Group have just returned from visits to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) They will soon be making their way to  the Islamic Republic of Iran.

While we do not anticipate any radio activity on these visits, it’s about making human connections and personal contacts. Fear of strange and foreign people can be reduced when people meet and “break bread” or enjoy a moment of laughter together. On my last visit to the DPRK, we enjoyed several impromptu games of Volleyball with our DPRK “minders”

Members of our group enjoy a volleyball game with some local people.

These games also included members of a seaside village. During and after the game, we enjoyed ice cold North Korean beer together. The North Koreans are very good at volleyball and they enjoyed giving us an old fashion “whooping”. The good will and good spirits flowed and we all enjoyed ourselves. It’s not always about radio but we dream one day of sharing that aspect with our friends in North Korea as well.

We are excited about our upcoming visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran. There is a long and tangled relationship between our countries. We hope that as our common issues and concerns increase that good will can take hold and prevail. It all starts with a conversation.
